Rocky Mountain Creation Fellowship is privileged to have
as our September 2004 speaker, Dr. Vern Peterman. The title
of Dr. Peterman's talk that Friday evening will be A Geology
Adventure. When Dr. Peterman began his geology studies,
they began from an old-earth standpoint, since that's what
they taught as fact at that time. But in his concurrent fieldwork
& classroom studies he began studying the young earth
perspective, including books and the Creation
Research Society quarterly. He attended several ICR seminars.
In his independent investigations, he made a trip around the
western US, along with additional reading, substantial calling
& writing letters to scientists, noting limestone cave
feature (stalactites & stalagmites) growth rate, he accepted
the young earth model of geology.
He switched to civil engineering in 1973, receiving his degree
from San Jose State University in June 1977 and professional
engineering (PE) registration in 1980. Dr. Peterman received
his M.B.A. in Business Management from Golden Gate University
in 1986 and his Doctor of Ministry from Tyndale Theological
Seminary in July 2001. Dr. Peterman is currently an Elder
with Holly Hills Bible Church.
Dr. Peterman will also speak on petrified stumps from the
1920s in Mendocino County, California - in the Robinson drainage
area, and in particular, a redwood stump, completely petrified
in spring of 2003 that stopped CAT bulldozers dead. He has
photographs and two sample pieces which look very much like
aged redwood. He will present a history of the stumps and
their discovery: the man who cut the stumps in the 1920s died
in June of 2002 and his grandson was on the logging team that
discovered the petrified trunks.
Dr. Peterman also considers the days of Genesis 1 to be extremely
important and literal. He will expound on the reasons why
the days of Genesis are solar days, the difference it makes
and why we must have consistent interpretation. He will also
address the issue of epistemology: the acquisition of knowledge
and of attaining objective, truthful knowledge. The Scripture
is our sole basis of authority: this is why general revelation
(what we see in nature) is not equal to the specific revelation
in Scripture.
Friday's meeting starts at 7 PM sharp. Dr. Peterman will
be available to answer your individual questions after his
talk. Free refreshments will be served after the meeting and
the RMCF rental library will be available to RMCF members.
The meeting will start promptly at 7 PM. If you are interested
in becoming a member of RMCF, please call RMCF at (303) 525-5500
or email us at talk@youngearth.org.
Please come early and get seated!
Dr. Peterman's Philosophy of Ministry
The pastor-teacher, according to Scripture, is also called
an elder and overseer. It is his assignment, in unison with
a team of elders, to build up the local Body of Christ under
their care, and equip them to do the work of the ministry.
This must be done in complete agreement with Scripture. An
examination of our Lord's assessment of the seven churches
in Revelation chapters 2 and 3 reveals that there are three
primary aspects of the life of a church:
1. Doctrine and teachings based on God's word
2. Morals and character based on Biblical principle
3. Spiritual life and passion based on His life
These are eternal issues for which there are no substitutes
or compensating achievements. In the midst of church budgets,
buildings, staffing, resource allocation, planning, and the
like, these critical areas of growth must remain our primary
focus. Our mandate and perspective are presented in two passages
in Colossians:
Colossians 1:28; 3:1-4
"We proclaim Him, admonishing every man and teaching
every man with all wisdom, so that we may present every man
complete in Christ
Therefore if you have been raised
up with Christ, keep seeking the things above, where Christ
is, seated at the right hand of God. Set your mind on the
things above, not on the things that are on earth. For you
have died and your life is hidden with Christ in God. When
Christ, who is our life, is revealed, then you also will be
revealed with Him in glory."
