Though Pontius Pilate found no fault in Jesus and tried to release him, he allowed Jesus to be crucified. This coin was issued by Pilate in the year 30 A.D., the most probable year of the crucifixion. The spiraling symbol is a littus, a tool used in pagan sacrifices. It was placed on this coin by Pilate to intentionally displease the Jews. It was used on these coins only during 29 and 30 A.D. The side of the coin with the littus is visible over an eye of the victim in the shroud of Turin image.
